Rose and The Silly Chickens Shop

Rose and The Silly Chickens, from the upcoming children’s picture books, are now available in the Shop. Can you believe it? Tehlia Lauerman has hand drawn art being printed on zipper pouches, notebooks, onesies, throw pillows and phone cases. Seriously? That’s me, I did it. When I first started drawing The Silly Chickens I imagined I would place them on something, but 6 months ago I would not have imagined they would be on a variety of items.

I am extremely proud and excited about the shop opening. My excitement comes from the fact that as a mother to 4 tiny humans who are 4 years old down to 7 months old, I managed to create a few things. Stolen moments, forfeited sleep and lots of patience had to occur in order to draw, scan, edit and design a website. I probably owe my kids buckets of ice cream and my husband a vacation.

The Silly Chickens Children’s Book, how they got started

I started drawing The Silly Chickens as a request from my children. My daughter would ask me to draw a chicken. Then to draw a chicken with a flower, with a bee, with an umbrella and so on. Her requests were cute and fun. They got me creating everyday and working on new ways to show her that The Silly Chickens were brave and learning something new on the farm.

The more I drew them the better they got and as time went by I wondered what a Silly Chicken book would look like. So we created a book to help us learn colors. My children loved it, and would request it daily. The fun my kids had as we followed The Silly Chickens through their day was reason enough for me to keep drawing them. As a parent it is extremely exciting to see your kids light up with excitement when they recognize the color on each page and yell out the names.

Their excitement naturally led to me thinking other children might enjoy seeing The Silly Chickens and all the things they find.

The Silly Chickens first book is all about colors. Your child gets to help the chickens name the colors on the flowers they find. Once the first book is released for sale I plan to have others available shortly after – learning shapes, numbers and so much more. I hope to turn The Silly Chickens into an early learning collection with books and toys your children will enjoy for years.

If you like chickens especially silly ones and have kids who love them too, be sure to connect with me on Instagram for sneak peeks of the book and Silly Chicken illustrations.

Fitted Crib Sheet Turtorial

Have you ever thought of making your own fitted crib sheet? This is a great beginner level project for a baby shower gift or for your own baby’s crib. If you are an experienced sewer then this is a fast gift you can whip up in less than an hour.¬† The supply list is pretty short and straight forward.

  • 2 yards of fabric ** helpful hint ** make sure it measures at least 44 inches across. Anything shorter won’t work.
  • 90 inches of elastic. I used quarter-inch wide.

Wash and iron your fabric before working with it.

Cut your fabric to measure 44×68 inches. Then fold it in half, lengthwise and then in half again. Sew the four corners are all together. Next you need to cut out an 8×8 square from the corners. This will create your fitted crib sheet corners once sewn together.

Here is my favorite video for the sewing instructions and two options for adding the elastic. Dana from Made Everyday is a wonderful creative and teacher.

I loved the fabric I chose so much that I picked up another yard 36×44 and 1 yard of Gray Minky Dot. Measured the minky to match the measurements of the floral fabric, placed right sides together and sewed around the edges leaving a 3 inch opening. Turned the blanket right side out and sewed about a quarter-inch top stitch all around the blanket closing off the 3 inch opening in the process. DONE. Matching baby blanket and Fitted Crib Sheet.
